...I would put E9s in the same category as Alfa Romeo GTV coupes from the early '70s. They are absolutely beautiful cars to look at and a joy to drive, but no one ever made any money at resale time.

I can sure relate to the GTV reference. Had a new Alfa in the seventies and had the pleasure of "restoration" over five years of ownership!
When I took my first BMW (a rather sorry example of an E24) by to a body shop for advise/estimate, he told me "Kharman invented rust and licenced it to the Italians". Sold the car and found a better example ('87 M6).
Really the thing the E9 (or the GTV for that matter) has in spades is nostalgia for the era of manufacture. Not too many folks all that nostalgic for the late 80's. I guess one always dreams of the car you couldn't have in your youth!
