I agree with your post points except for the poor resale. Considering the original cost of the E9, around 9 grand, going for an average of 6500(good project car) now a days ain't too shabby. Of course that is an enthuiast paying that much money. You'd never get that from an average Joe in Auto Trader.

Based on what I've seen (spent a year looking) most of these cars in decent shape sell for much more than the majority of cars from that time period. At least they are in the upper-end hobbyist scale anyway. You can't class them like Aston Martins or anything.

But according to the numbers (if correct) they are some pretty rare cars. It is really amazing if you think about it just how rare they are. You'd think they would cost even more than they do.

------------------------------------------------
My '72 3.0CS sold new for $14K, and I bought it recently for my personal car (not resale) for $7K in nearly rust-free condition with a new $6K engine and $1K cooling system. Due to personal considerations, I came to the unfortunate decision that I must sell it before restoration (medical problems).

I have been shocked at how few people are interested in such a decent vehicle at what I thought was a decent price ($7K).

I have undertaken the restoration slowly in an effort to recoup my original investment in the hope that if I sell it for my costs, I might break even. Even then, I wonder if I'll even be able to get $9500 for the car.

In contrast, my TR6 (as the one below) would bring about that much and is a much less sophisticated car costing 1/3 the CS originally and not close to the performance standard.

In my mind e9s, unless concours or CSL, tend to be black holes into which owners should expect to throw money with little hope of recouping it. If I, with a full restortation shop, including a spray booth, will have trouble just breaking even, what hope does the average Joe have when he pays retail for the work?

You have to LOVE these cars to spend the money.

Bob

Are you implying yours is for sale? If so, what are the specifics? Thanks.
