HEllo,
I'm looking at a 3.0 CS as my next car ... the two that are listed in the classifieds in my area both have rebuilt engines. I was wondering if such engines are usually reliable? (Of course, there are many things that could go wrong if the job isn't done right, but if it is.. is it nearly as good as a new BMW engine?)
Thanks...and one quick question .. is there any older (pre 90s) BMW model that has a hatchback?

You are correct when you say that many things can go wrong with a poorly rebuilt engine, but if done right, a rebuilt engine can actually exceed the reliability of a new engine since the block was "seasoned" by its previous cycles.
That said, it does depend on the quality of the parts and labor involved.
Given the fact that many "unopened" M30 engines have exceeded 300,000 miles and were still running well at that point, I cannot imagine that even a minimally "freshened" engine (valve grind, new rings, bearings and seals)would not reach that point in even better running shape.
I would not avoid purchasing a BMW with a rebuilt engine if it ran smoothly and had no obvious signs of problems (noises, smoke, etc.).
Given the cost of a "new" factory engine (upwards of $7000), I cannot see how anyone could justify this avenue if his engine were just in need of new consumables (rings/bearings/seals).

One of our board readers sent me the following email when he saw the price we Americans are charged for a factory-new engine. Birger recently offered that Glasurit Urethane paint taht costs almost $1000 here is available for only a couple of hundred dollars in Europe as well.
It would be well worth paying the freight to get a BRAND NEW M30 engine right from the BMW factory for $1100.00!

Hi Bob,
just a quick sort of ? mark to yhe prices you are charged with for bmw parts. i saw you wrote in a response to rebuilt engine, that cost of a " new factory engine" was appr 7000 Dlrs. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In Germany, new leadfree 2800 motro, 0 mileage is sold over the counter for 2800 DM = 11.000 Norwegian Kroners= 1250 USDLRS. there are freight costs, but not that much,
Happy CS ing
