I am having a problem issolating a erratic temperature gauge
everything is ok with the temp untill I turn on the lights/fan or even the radio and then it goes to the red zone! the engine is NOT overheating.
I changed the temperature sender twice with others from bavarias/530s etc no difference! I even changed the gauge with one from a 2002 (its the same.
Everything is working great untill I turn something on.
However if I switch the engine off and return the key to the start position (not cranking position) the gauge is normal, then when I crank the engine and run it goes to the red again. Driving at night on a freeway and cold outside it still reads red.
I even changed the wire from the sender to the gauge(brown/white) the problem still persists
HELP Ian

At last I found the problem!
the wiring harness for the engine compartment had lost its resistance and was causing a EMF (electro magnetic field).
The wiring inside the protective outer cover was stuck together (not melted) this is the wires from the plug connector on top of the brake booster leading to the starter\alternator\temp and oil gauges etc.
Quick fix - carefully seperate the wires,or rewire engine compartment
