It must be a fault that's not causing your charge light to come on, presumably? I'll have a look in the Factory Manual, see if I can find any info.

But it's strange, because once you've got the car running, there's almost no drain on the battery at all (carby car, no headlights or mega sound-system I'm assuming).

That's if it is the driving that's flattening it. I'm assuming you've checked for rogue glovebox & boot/trunk lights which are staying on. You should get a tiny drain on the battery even when the car is garaged - that's the clock, of course.
