Graeme,
There is some relative play between the shaft and that little white gear. The motor would try to turn both directions (15-20 degree or so), when I open the motor cover. Following the shaft up to the worm gear, everything seems OK until the large sprocket wheel, which is frozen solid. You are right about the window stuck in the up position, but you stop short of telling me what I should do next.
