I received the Autobooks/Mary Ball book with the E3 I bought back in 85. I found it useful, if a bit limited. I picked up the Haynes manual a year or two later (also bought the E9 in 86) and was visiting my local dealer here in Sydney some time in 88 when my parts guy said they had Factory Workshop Manuals available (as a spare part). I bought one for A$50-odd, and thought it a bargain! It had no binder, or the yellow divider tabs, but everything else was there.

I tend to check the factory manual first if I have a problem with anything. It's quite comprehensive, and has a lot of photos that Haynes/Autobooks do not. But Haynes is a bit more down-to-earth, which is good. Large chunks of the text, as well as photos and some drawings are straight lifts from the Factory book though.

The only real complaint with all of them is that the wiring diagrams never seem to be right (this is an E9 issue rather than E3). Despite the glovebox sticker in my car clearly saying 3.0CS, the fuse pattern didn't match the one in the Factory Manual. I'm assuming that's because it's a RHD car. Ah, the joys of motoring...

cheers,
Graeme
