how to check thermostat? (archive)

my car has been taking forever to warm up so I'm wondering if the thermostat is stuck open or otherwise messed up. How do I get to it on this motor to check it out?

Other than that, should the motor get warm before the radiator hoses do or is it the other way around? I'm still tring to sort simple things of that sort out...

Does anyone have service manual scans of the thermostat section for the CS or Bav or 530? the Carburator scans of the 530 manual were really helpful.
