Having owned and driven several of each car (both are a delight to drive BTW)I'd say the 3.5 liter 5er is a bit more "lopey" and has the low end grunt a bit more than the coupe (low end meaning massive low rpm torque)vs. the coupe's ability to spin very freely at higher rpms. I think you'll find the cars very similar in their 0-60 performance - although I bet the later transmission in the 535i makes better use of the power / shift points.
