here's my assessment...

$15K would be what I'd budget, based on what you describe. Maybe you'll get lucky and get a good find for $12K, but be very ready for weekend projects outstripping drive time at $10K and under. Much less and there are problems that'll get you there pretty quickly. I bought one for $8.5K two years ago that comes close to fitting your bill, and I'm into it for another $2-3K in stuff I didn't see. It's a '72 csi polaris with black leather and great wood/chrome, so I was sold on the color/interior combo for refurbishing st some point when life settles down!

hope that helps. Nothing wrong with a Coupe that has a few blemishes, it still gives the grin factor to the driver and to the observer.

Focus on rust first, them mechanical. After that, the cosmetics depend on where you are on the scale of fussiness.

i think phil said NOT concours.

but to your point, he DID say PRIMO and i doubt that's something 10 grand will buy. not in the current market at least.

if i were in the market for a nice driver, i'd up my budget to at least 13-15K (a really, really clean car would probably run you 18-22K i should think, depending on locale)

allow me to digress for a second on concours cars.

lots of folks throw the word concours around without really meaning concours. technically, it's actually like saying "supermodel." in other words, there aren't many of them, particularly in the CS world. (sorry but BMW club q-tip sessions, nat'l or otherwise, may be fun but do not count for much.)

here's one pretty good definition of a "class one" car from "the SL market letter":

"[a class one car is]... a top show car capable of winning a national meet. the car is not driven, it has been restored to the top professional standards with expense being a secondary consideration. if the car loses points at a concours, which all cars will, it is more than likely that the reason is dirt. to be more explicit, DUST... [or] possibly too much grease on a door hinge. but there is seldom found something done incorrectly. all parts are new original specification (NOS) if available."


with that in mind, let me say 2 things:

1. i have never seen a concours E9.
2. these cars are too much fun not to drive.

phil, bite the bullet & spend a few more bucks -- it's worth it.

You will need much more than $10000 for a primo example.
I am new to this board (I have an e32 735i)looking for the nicest 3.0CS ('72 or '73 only) I can find.

It should have no rust at all (recent restoration) with good paint, and should have a good leather interior (some patina is acceptable, but no cracking, tears, hard leather, or bad seams), and a new or newly rebuilt engine and suspension. A sunroof would be nice, but it shouyld also have decent air conditioning and a nice stereo.

Naturally, I would like receipts for all work done, and I am not interested in cars repaired after wrecks.

I can pay top dollar for a really primo car (up to $10,000 cash), but naturally would like to pay as little as possible.

Could someone point me to the car I am looking for? I am willing to travel to find a really nice one. Please-no junk. I am not looking for a Concours car, but it must be REALLY nice.
