If you mean the driveshaft, I say yes, although purists would say no! I have used an automatic trans driveshaft behind a 230HP Korman stage 2 engine for years. I have to admit that the driveshaft is really about 3/4 inch too short, so the splined connection in the middle is stretched by about that much.
As a point of general information, unfortunately, the driveshafts that come with the G265 transmissions (i.e. E-12s, etc.) have a different length rear section and so the center support bearings dont fit in the right place so you can't use them. BillYou need an 80-81 Getrag 5 speed to get a speedometer drive. These came in a variety of models. You might be able to find a 635 or 735 from those years. Alternatively, this same transmission was used in 82 & 85 528e's and 85 535,635 and 735's, as well as E30 M3's but without the speedometer drive installed. You could have the drive gear and drive from your coupe installed (they are the same parts-I've done this). Note that if you get the 528e transmission, the bellhousing won't fit your engine, but you can use your 4 speed bellhousing.
Great info Bill but is the drive from my existing automatic compatible with the getrag 5 .
thanks
