Starter Problem?? (archive)

Once in a while I get this loud,bell ringing sound as I start the the engine. It doesn't turn over and I try again and that usually starts the car. Is my starter going out or the ring pinion or something else. BTW, how do I get the starter out? Do I take of the intake manifold. thanks
