There are those who have asked what the chrome side "vent" grills look like, here they are. They were standard on dark color cars, and optional on the rest when the car was ordered.

They were standard on my chamonix (white) which is not a very dark color!

The Orange parts book and BMW Mobile Traditions states the above information, in fact gives the colors with which the chrome ones were standard. Perhaps the original buyer specified the chrome, or BMW was running short of black ones the day yours was built. These cars are the most non-standard I've ever owned. Each is a little different.

I have black plastic side grills on my '72 3.0 which is dark blue. So either they came from the factory in chrome and were replaced with black ones during the previous body-off restoration in 1998, or the factory ran out of chrome plastic ones when the car was on the assembly line that day, back in 1972.
