Thanks for suggestions re- hot foot. I am going to check my cables, and flaps first, but I think the best solution in the long run, will be a hot water control valve either cable or electric. I had american cars for years which usually have no hot water control valve and I could never completely turn off the heat. Having the valve, was one thing that impressed me about the 02's. It will be interesting to see how much hotter the car runs with a valve set in the off position on a hot day.
