Rob:

To clarify, the heater core is NOT part of the A/C unit. The heater core is located in the factory heater/ventilation assembly. E9's basically had afterthought air conditioning systems installed at the point of destination. The units where mostly manufactured by Behr (maybe frigiking (sp)). Granted, the Behr units were artfully integrated into the factory dash, but caused the radio to be located periously close to the shifter with little room for the radio. The evaporator is located in the air condition housing just below the vent controls and behind the radio. You have to remove the A/C air box/evaporator to access the heater core. Of course if there is no A/C, then all this is moot.

Yes they have heater cores. They are located in the HVAC unit in the center of the car under the dash. The part number for it is 64 11 1 351 359. This can probably still be purchased through BMW, but I would suggest Maxamillian. As far as installation, it is a PITA. You have to remove the whole HVAC unit from the car and then disassemble and reassemble it. I would suggest that when you are in there, that you replace the felt on the end of the flaps with new felt. This stuff degrades and you will get air leaks through the unit if you don't. Also make sure to be very careful with the plastic as it is very old and has gotten brittle by this age. Hope this helps
