Funny - I own a 2800CS and was thinking of buying a '02 as well. I've driven all three and they break down like this: 6 series are great cross-country cars and that's about it. 2002's are the most fun in general as they have that tossable go-cart feeling to them. A CS feels more solid and inspires a lot more confidence than a 2002, especially at higher speeds. The power band of the BMW six is wayyyy longer than the four and encourages the driver to really push the gears to scary-high speeds. Power-sliding a CS though a hard turn in second gear at 60 mph is right up there with good sex. On the other hand, CS bodywork and parts are comparatively rare and expensive (painfully so) to a 2002, which makes it prohibitive for racing or autocrossing -- which is why I'm considering a 2002. Road and Track declared the CS the "Best Car in the World" in its day, and it still feels that way. Finally, CS's are not good traffic-jam cars. Given the combination of 9.0+:1 compression and contemporary fuel octane, they run really hot and foul their plugs pretty quickly at low revs. Use the '02 to commute.

I currently own a well restored 75 2002 and am looking at gettting a 3.0 CS or a 635 CSi in addition. Having not owned or really driven either of these much, can anyone share their thoughts about the pros and cons of each (e.g. driving experience, cost of ownership, availability of parts and skilled mechanics). At this point I'm leaning towards the 3.0 CS and considering an automatic (I know, a stick is probably the only real enthusiast choice, but traffic here in Atlanta is the pits).

Thanks,
Jeff
