Shortcut!? Thin veneers is common woodworking practices. Also, that (including the multiply ply plywood) is how they get the curvature in the panels (plys are laid in a jig and glued up ply by ply in the jig).

Not really sure, but for some reason the phrase 'teak' sticks in my head. Possibly from some old road test report, perhaps.
One thing I can guarantee, having had the entire dashboard of my car apart many years ago, is that it's a quite thin veneer laid over about 12 thickness plywood. I don't think you have to dig very deep on these 'hand-built' cars of the 60's & 70's to find all the shortcuts of the coachbuilder's art...
