The engine (with the dual downdraft Weber conversion and a new stock cam replacing the Schrick 304 degree it had when I bought it) has great low end torque along with good high rpm power. I would say if feels gutsier than my 535is low and high, eventhough it should have less torque.
I haven't dyno'd it to prove anything, though.

I run headers on my E28 535i and I have just installed headers on my 3500csi. Headers will give you more high end power and with a 3.0 you should still have plenty of torque. The problem with headers is that most people(I am not saying this is anyone on this list) think that you can only get 1 style of header. The style that comes to mind is a race header where the primaries are very long. This style of header decreases torque quite a bit, but there are other styles of header. The one that I put on the 3500csi is actually a shorter primary header. I call it almost a stubby header even though that is not the correct term. the shorter primaries help to keep back pressure up, therefore keeping low end torque up, while being less of a restriction up top.
Hope this helps,

not worth it from what I hear (if it's a street car). dissadvantages would be noise, heat, cost, smog laws (if applies). I have them on my other car (installed by the PO), a 3.0S, but it will be a while before it runs I don't know what they are like yet.
