Brett, awhile back I read a post from the E24 page by a guy named Paul from the Northeast somewhere who restores car. He swears by using boiled lint seed oil (ace hardware) to stop rust. He said that it cuts off all oxygen and can be sanded and painted. You might want to check the archives for the E24 page.

I have this lovely euro 1971 3.0CS (see link) that I am trying to keep on the road and in general alive. It's too nice of a car. Anyway, I have ad various CS experts look at the car first hand, on a hoist and they all say, "the usual amount of rust... a solid car... no problem to restore... just do it soon..."

I can do all of the mechanical work and the car sat around for around 10 years so there is/was a lot to do in order to fix up the stuff that deteriorated over that time (rad rebuilt, calipers rebuilt, front shocks replaces, new guibo, engine tuned up/carbs, cleaned up in general).

The body is another story. I have no idea what to do in this regard. What I have done is located rust spots and cleaned them out as much as i can, removing any debris that can absorb water. I am going to get under the car and scrape away any old undercoating and rust and paint with primer. I was also going to spray rust inhibitor where-ever i can get it.

The plan is to get the front fenders and rockers restored. I don't want to do an obsessive concours restoration - just get rid of the rot. I'd prefer stock panels or remanufactured panels but i'd be happy with steel patches in some spots - just no bondo or filler.

I'm not asking about what to do as far as the restoration. What I am asking what can I do in the meantime to slow the progress of rot? It may be a year or two before I can get the money together to do the car the way I want.
