Question about NLA parts... (archive)

I'm a visitor from the e31 board, and I have an open question on how to get parts that are no longer available. So far, I have needed a number of parts that were said by the dealer to be NLA, but somebody somewhere had a stock.

Most recently, one of the parts inside the exterior door handle assembly cracked, and the part is NLA according to the dealers. When it happened, the only thing that made it possible for me to get in (other than climbing in on the passenger side [too undignified]) was to use the key to roll down the window from the outside.

Zygmunt and Jurgen both found the assembly for me, but the ETK part number was a dummy, and it took a long time to figure it out. Here's the question: What do you guys do when a part is truly NLA, and you can't find the used part?
