If the insurance company totalled the car and someone retitled it, then it's a salvage. But totalling a coupe that didn't have special classic car insurance wouldn't take much physical damage at all. Dent a front fender and the grill area and you're in for major welding and lots of man hours. Same for quarter panels. If I knew the type and extent of the damage and an expert said it was repaired properly, I go for it as long as the price reflected the reality of the diminished value of the car. Can't help you with numbers on that one. Maybe an auto appraiser can tell you.

However, if the damage is to the extent of the back of one car being welded to the front of another, I'd stay away from that.

Call your insurance dude for the real story. Depends on your specific type of insurance. Most people have Actual Cash Value (ACV), so you might want to have a written agreement with the company on the current value of the car.

On the other hand, you sound like you're uncomfortable with the whole idea. If that's the case, find another. And let us know where this car is!
