I think colors like Golf, Inka, Colorado, etc. look very nice on '70s BMW 2-doors, though they may not be as timeless as the more traditional tones. They seem to hint at the youthfulness of the brand in that era and the sporting presence the company was establishing. Witness the rise and racing success of the Motorsport division in the early '70s. At the other end of the spectrum would be the cars from Benz, conservative in style and color. A Benz in Golf would be a hard sell indeed, then and now. Interestingly, Audi (somewhat of an upstart in its own right in recent years) has incorporated a very Golf-like color into its A4 lineup:
