Most r12 systems can be converted to r134 with good results. Some systems will have up to a 20% or so loss in efficiency, but a high number of systems are similar in temp and no difference is noticed. I just finished a conversion last weekend on a Cadillac, which can sometimes be a little more tricky because of the computer. With it 98deg ambient outside, vent temperature was 70deg at idle and doors open. On the highway vent temp dropped to 47deg. Not great, but good enough in our low humidity area to keep my brother from having a sh*tty attitude.

I converted my '72 CS before I sold it. It had vent temps in the high 30's right after I did the conversion but it had a leak and lost its efficiency fairly quickly. I sold the car soon after that and hadn't fixed the leak, so I can't say how well it worked or whether it had any trouble or not.
