I saw one E9 up here where the wood was recovered like that by a guy in San Diego. It looked beautiful and the job was not very expensive!

If the base is solid, then I guess you can veneer a new sheet after sanding the old!! I went to a place down here last week that had veneers, and I took a piece of the wood trim and the closest match was a Honduras mahogany and it came in sheets as large as 2x6. I am going to try this on extra wood that I have to see how it works. I am sure it'll be okay.
