What kinda parts for a top end job? (archive)

It appears I'm in the land of the broken head gasket. Anyone remember that old Skitz von Bimmerhead cartoon? My coolant, though not discolored, is foamy/frothy over the green of the coolant. Will perform compression test prior to ripping into anything. I just rebuilt and synchronized the carbs, too, hoping to get the beast to run a little better. Not.

So, I expect to order a head gasket set from alloembmwparts.com. The bits they have supplied for the coupe and 533i thus far (four orders) have arrived very quickly, and have been the right stuff. I will order from them further, unless someone points out "better than BMW" parts which I should use.

I'm probably only going to do the top end. I may do the front seal at/around the same time, which part I already have, and will put in the OD five speed only after the engine is running again. The funf-ganger will get a new shifter rod seal and maybe a rear seal too.

My engine didn't leak or consume oil prior to this latest mishap. I did overheat it some time back, then had the radiator (with a leaking seam) rodded and resoldered. The exhaust hasn't been smoky on downshifts (that I know of) so it appears that only the head gasket (plus whatever may have happened to the head itself) is affected.

Soooo... anyone recommend using some kinda special parts to do this? Will do the R&R myself, have done 2002s before.
