1) Shop for a knowledgeable repair shop before you buy so you have a place where you have prospects checked. Ask them about common likely repairs and costs.
2) Join the BMW CCA and the CS Register and find the local CS experts and ask for their advice. They are usually happy to help.
3) Look at as many coupes as you can, for sale or not. If you can get to Monterey the weekend of Aug 17-19, there will be a lot of coupes at the Concours Italiano and in the BMW CCA corral at the Monterey Historics at Laguna Seca. Talk to people at those places.
4) Try to figure out what you want. If you want a perfect concours show car, you'll have to pay for it. If you want a driver, you probably want a car that has some modifications/updates: 5 speed overdrive especially.
