Also the ones with the black centers had only four vertical slats and the chrome surround was a bit thicker. There are some grills with the five black vertical slats and given that some of the were painted by their owners, like me, since I like the look of five better than four.

chrome centers = cars before 1974
black senters = 74 and above (and CSL's usually)

that's about all there is to it. Then the chrome or black for side and hood vents depended on the color of the car, what they left like doing that day at the factory, and possibly how it was ordered.

I'm aware of the kidney grilles that have either black or unpainted centers, but I didn't know about differences beyond that. Can you explain?

I'm always willing to expand my store of coupe knowledge (or trivia, depending on how you look at it).
