I am on my way tommorrow to potentially begin a life long dream or perhaps a nightmare: A CS is offered for sale with a claimed 60K miles, in original condition and with NO RUST! My question is, if I can't see the rust, can it be hiding out of sight? If so, how do I find it? I used to do body work and mechanics on 2002s so I am familiar with replacing rockers, fenders, shock towers and the likes. I am concerned that the CS may have secret compartments that perhaps you could help me locate! Any other CS-specific pre-purchase tips are warmly welcomed!
Also, ( this is hard to describe) look up under the front wheel guard - stand / crouch at the wheel and feel up the wall towards the cabin. On either side of the car is a "triangle" shaped hole - I'm not sure why it is there - but its a prolific rust area.
Also, check the rear windshield seal - mine is leaking and the wall between the trunk ( boot) and cabin may has some rust. You could also take out the rear seats and look for any signs of leaking or rust.
One final - ( I'm a bit of a rust experct here!!) - as andrey said - check the sunroof very carefully if it has one) From by experience - if there are "rusty" signs ( ie brown colour on the sunroof headline) then there is definitely rust in the rear sunroof pan. this is very difficult and v expensive to remedy. I had a 633 with these telltail signs - I finally removed the headline - and the whole internal sunroof retraction plate collapsed - VERY RUSTED - into my hands!!.
Good Lock.
.........That's Good Luck!! - hope the lock is O.K also!!!
