After stripping and metal repair (mig-welding, etc,) you can use self etching zinc chromate primer (such as DuPont VariPrime 615) or epoxy primer (DuPont Corlar or Nason FulPoxy) over the cleaned bare metal. Then you can fill/fill as desired.

I would like to purchase a CS in a near future, as rust free as possible, and then restore it to bring it into good shape w/o rust. I'll likely strip it to the bare shell and repaint it. I'm not looking to make a concours car, just a good daily driver that looks as good as my other cars.

What I am looking for is information on how to rust-proof panels to approach modern standards of rust-resistance. I've painted my 1989 325 iC and a 1983 Porsche 944 and used a PPG 'sealer' before the primer, but was wondering if that is the only way. Such a treatment would have to work on incompletely stripped panels as I do not intend to go to bare metal over 100% of the car, just those areas that need it for filler work and existing rust removal.
