I too would like to get a CS in the near future and swap in a 3.5L from either an E28 535i or, if it fits, from an E34 535i. I'd definitely go with the Motronic engine.
Here are my comments. Please note that I have not done this, but am thinking about it.
1. I have a friend who had an S50USB30 (1995 E36 M3 motor) and Getrag 280 (M3 tranny) swapped into his car for $6000 all including motor. I think labour was $1500. The car can be seen at:

2. I'd like to do the M3 conversion too, but the cost and maintenance is an issue and, frankly, I'd rather spend the money on the body of the car. An M30B35 can be got very cheaply and it responds really well to the Jim Conforti chip, putting out 240 HP post chip. I would guess less than $2k for the motor+tranny. Probably $1.5k for a high-mileage one. Count another $1.5k for the labour. Then about $500 for the diff. and $400 for the driveshaft max.
See here for an E30 chassis S50/S52 conversion CD that might help you:

Here is one such car owned by a friend:

3. Obviously, the coolest option is the S38 since it does have the M49 CSL pedigree. The M30 does too, but the S38 is really what the M49 was. But, talk about cost and maintenance and you are way ahead of the S50/S52. Trust me, I'm rebuilding mine! However, my rebuild experience is giving me a new confidence and that might be enough to make me do an S38/CS. The power will not be much more than the S50, which, being OBD I, is highly tunable and can put out close to 300 HP.
Like another Lister pointed out, it really is a matter of what you want from the car.

I've been convinced it's time to swap out the motor, and have heard various opinions on 3.3 versus 3.5 alternatives. I'd love to hear experienced voices. Also, a couple of topics I'd also appreciate commented on:
1) price expectations for the job (all inclusive)
2) is an M3 conversion just too complicated? (the concept is salivating :)
3) any gotchas or things to be aware of going in?
4) anyone have recommended sources for the work in Colorado?
All input greatly appreciated.
