Bill:

Some very good information, particularly on the speedo drive grafting. Is is possible to convert the stock speedo to accept a pulse sender input? Has anyone tried grafting in a later speedo with the stock dial pattern?

Thanks!

1. I've never seen the M3 conversion so can't comment on that, but you're going to have to deal with the speedo issue at the least. (No mechanical speedo cable drive)
2. The 3.3 L Jet conversion is easiest, it doesn't require replacing the brake booster.
3. For the 3.5 Motronic converson the conversions I have seen all converted to the E28 hydraulic brakes too. There isn't enough room for both the manifold and the stock brake booster.
4. For transmission with the Motronic, use an 85 535 or 635 bellhousing that came with the Getrag 265 5 speed. This will also work with the coupe 4 speed if you want to keep that. If you get the 85 5 speed, it doesn't come with a speedo drive but you can use the parts (gear and drive) from your coupe 4 speed.
5. Cost? If you are having someone else do this, remember that unless they have done it before they aren't going to know what to charge. It is a lot of extra work for every option, except for may be the 3.3 LJet and even that involves some fuel line plumbing and wiring hookup.
6. The later 88 up 3.5s had 20+ horsepower over the earlier 3.3s and 3.5s if you have a choice.
