Yes, it has been done a few times. Actually, this is THE upgrade IMHO as the M49 (CSL racing engine) was the engine the M88/3 (M635CSi engine) came from. Apart from cost, it should make for a nice upgrade.

However, if you are going to take measurements, check out the M62 (95 540i motor) as those motors are now in the $2k category w/ trannies (auto) around $1.1k and possible 6-sp applications. I'd like to know if this motor will fit. The M62 makes almost as much power and will be a lot easier to maintain (though the S38 is not that tough) and maybe be more tractable in traffic.

Anyone have any advice on a possible engine replacement?
