As evidenced by the Karmann tags on the A-pillars showing the paint code, the cars received their topcoat at Karmann (in Rheine near Osnabrück). ASFAIK, final assembly was also done there.
I heard (unsubstantiated) that Karmann would ship built coupe bodies in primer to BMW, where they would sit outside until they were run through the assembly line.
If true, then the coupes probably started rusting before they were completed!
Anyone out there who actually saw coupe production in the 70's?
