I have heard the same thing. An acquaintance is thinking of welding b-pillars into a track-CS just to stiffen it up.

I suspect the M30 will be a good match for the car, but wonder if the M62 (which is getting really cheap used now) won't be nice to have just to do something different. I think the weights are about the same due to the Al block on the M62 as opposed to cast iron on the M30.

However, the M30 is easier to work on, cheaper to get parts for, more aesthetically matched to the engine bay and car, more historically relevant. In fact, the only engine that belong in the car more in the S38 (since the S38 came from the M49 from the racing CSLs). That would be too darned expensive for a daily driver though, IMHO.

Hi Neil,
The guy at autosolution (short-shift kit) did numerous engine / tranny transplant before go into BMW performance upgrade business. He managed to stuff a Mustang 5.0 into an E9 sometime back, but found that the chasis is not stiff enough under heavy acceleration. Something to think about. Who can say you cannot beef up the frame though.
