After thinking more about it, I think that this is only applicable to 1982 528e and 1985 535i 5-speeds. I don't think the '83 or '84 528e transmissions will work.

This is true and what you said about installing the drive parts is also true, but you will also have to remove the rear case and install the drive gear, too. At least this has been the case on the 82 and 85 trans I have seen.
You can use the gear and drive parts out of your old 4 speed or from other Getrag 4 speeds, like from '02s or E21s (or other big sixes for that matter. Don't know about the early ZF 4 speeds tho.
