I only use 89 in all my cars without ever having a problem associated with it. Granted, I have not driven my 73 3.0CS much, but it never pings, diesels or whatever. Of course, I always adjust the timing to meet my driving habits and gasoline grade. Go with 89 and do not worry. If you get pinging under heavy loads, try retarding the timing a bit.

ever since i bought my car over 7 years ago, i've been filling my tank with 92+ octane. yesterday, they were out of super, i filled it with 89 & the car was fine with it -- i've been over-spending on fuel all these years!
