Retard your timing. Best to set timing by ear, engine speed, smoothness. Basically, I slowly advance the timing until I get the highest and smoothest idle. This will lead to detonation, so I then retard the timing slightly. Take the car for a test drive (fully up to temp) and accelerate hard up an incline in a higher gear. If I get detonation, I retard a little. I do all this with 87 octane. If you get dieseling with shut down (carbs) then one or two of two things are wrong. Most likely, your idle speed is to high. Secondly, the anti-dieseling solenoids are not working (Webers do not have anti-dieseling solenoids). If your timing is too far advanced, you make get hard cranking.
So if I have detonation in my 2800 w/FI on 93 octane where should I set the advance?? (this occurs over 4000 rpm which seems the most unlikely condition for detonation)
