did you know that 87 octane actually has more energy than a similar volume of 92? something about the refining process, as I poorly understand it.

My car is stock '73 though I think the build date from the VIN is a '72. So what.

I have recently rebuilt the carbs. Really, just took 'em apart and cleaned them, and found they were clean inside anyway, and replaced the gaskets. Just yesterday, I reset the idle mix and the car's hot idle is a smooth 800 rpm per the onboard tach. Cold idle stays higher longer than I'd like, but the car has always run cool.

I've had the car about 7 years, from a P.O. who had it only long enough to bring it from the mainland, and knew nothing/told me nothing of its previous history. It was beautifully, professionally, all-glass-out-and-trim-off painted before I got it.

I looked over the engine, which was clean, and showed recent gasket sealer at several places. I knew nothing except what I could see. The odo shows 56 kmiles now just as when I bought it. Right, it doesn't work.

I assumed that if it had been taken care of mechanically as well as it had been painted, I would be okay. I seem to have been right, though the Auto trans slowly failed and I converted it (myself) to a 4-speed.

I have always run 87 octane. You have to know that until about a year ago, Hawaii had led the country for it seems like decades in high gas prices.

The car does not ping when running, and though I recently set the timing with a strobe, I will soon advance it a little by ear and see how she goes. The ignition is stock. I do have some dieseling on shutoff which I will watch. To me that is a idle speed issue, since I've checked the idle solenoid shutoff valves. I'm no pro mechanic, but a experienced DIY.
