Believe it will fit. I have a 5 speed OD trans from an '80 528i sitting on the side of my garage, waiting for me to put it in. My car was originally an auto trans, I changed to four speed some years back when the auto was failing. Change cost was about half the anticipated rebuild cost.

The close ratio five speed is not well regarded, for poor synchro life. I had a '79 euro 635 CSi and didn't much care for the trans or the car, though they both ran well enough.

The auto trans speedo cable is needed (it's longer than the manual trans) and you may have to mix and match the hydraulic line to the slave cylinder. Of course, the drive shaft will be changed, I understand the auto trans shaft can be stretched 3/4 inch to suit the five speed, which is what I plan to do.
