The ZF gearbox will work fine in the 3.0. I also used a 2800 to convert from auto to manual tranny and the ZF unit has not self destructed yet. However, it feels a bit notchy compared to cars with Getrag trannies that I have driven. The ZF unit is plug and play in the 3.0 cars.

Hi Bill

Thank you very much for your answer, i already thought this but was not sure. I am restoring a 72 bmw 3.0 csi and have 2800 car for parts. This caused my questions (there were 2 different gearboxes).

Thanks for your help

Jan Willem

I assume your have 4 speeds. The CSi originally had the Getrag 262 4 speed, as did the other 3 liter coupes. The earlier 2800CS had a ZF 4 speed.
A common modification for these cars is to install a Getrag 265 overdrive 5 speed. This requires having the driveshaft shortened and some other modifications.
