Also, I believe the 4HP is used in the E23 7 series. Later versions of the 4HP have electronic controls which must be avoided (i.e. E32 sevens and later E24 sixes).


I have heard people changing to an early 80's 5 or 6-series automatic without much effort. The CS Automatic is a real dog and should be avoided if possible.

Has anyone out there retrofit a late model automatic transmission into their CS. I am 75% complete in the restoration of a 1973 CS unfortunately I have Multiple Sclerosis and it has progressed in the past few years to the point that driving a manual trans. is a problem. The thought of completing this car and only being able to go for rides with my wife at the wheel is very disappointing. It seems the late model transmissions have progressed to the point that they are an acceptable alternative. Any information about what transmission is a fairly painless swap would be helpful.
