I have just visited the storage where my parts car (a '72 CSi) is parked along with 3 other E 9s (2800 CS, 3.0 CS and 3.0 CSi, all pre '75). They all have rectangular mirrors. There's also a 2000 CA there with its specific mirror. As said, I have never seen the trapezoid mirrors on any E9 in Switzerland. On the other hand, there are plenty of 2002s with these mirrors around. Of course, you may still be right, but why on earth would the 2002 owners be so much more concerned about originality than the E9 owners?
How can we know for sure? I guess the best would be to find an old (early 70s) photo of a Swiss E9? Can anybody out there help?
Best,
Mathis
mathis, my limited experience on this subject indicates otherwise. i have never seen a pre-1975 E9 with an original rectangular mirror.
i have even seen at least one swiss 2800CS with the smaller mirror (see pix below).
keep in mind that the trapezoidal mirror was not available for years and most everyone just upgraded to the larger (and hence, better) mirror when the gasket on their original mirror dried out. that was the only mirror available throughout most of the 80's & 90's!
if anyone knows otherwise, please chime in here.
best,
