Thank you all for the quick and sage response. Thankfully I have a back up vehicle that I can drive through the winter. My enthusiasm was getting the best of me.

Today I changed the oil and had my first exposure to the cannister style oil filter. After wrestling for 2 hours to get it off, I thought I had completed the job successfully. Apparently not.

The oil I added is now sitting on the driveway, a testament to some bone-headed mistake by myself. It was gushing out from the top of the oil filter.I did not replace the large, thin, o-ring type gasket but rather left the old one on. Was this my downfall?

Any suggestions about what I did wrong and or ideas for resources would be greatly appreciated.
