The best way to change the oil filter is what you have recommended. Remove the whole thing and replace the filter outside of the car and then reinstall. This is what I do, and have bought a extra gaskets and seals that I store for this change. Top bolt canisters from later cars will work too, but I still find the removal of the whole thing a lot easier, cleaner and faster.
