Any of the early cars will fit, but you have to look at two things to make sure:
1- the splines are coarse and not fine,
2- make sure the steering wheel has the horn ring on the wheel. For example 2002 wheels will not work (even tough the splines are the same) since the horn ring is on the steering column instead, unless you somehow modify it.
I think I once had the steering from a mid 80s 325i on my CSi and worked fine.
