74 3.0-considering purchase (archive)

I am considering getting rid of my 2001 Jetta TDI to get a 74 3.0 CS. However after spending some time looking around on this forum I have a few questions.

First of all the rust thing. I live on British Columbia's north coast. If you have never been here youwould not believe the rain. About 300 days of it and over 250 inches per year. Now we don't use salt on the roads here if that makes a difference but man oh man .... the rain. Am I insane to think this would make a daily driver with any type of life expectancy?

How about the fuel mileage with a 4 speed ? This one also has a sunroof. Was this a factory option? The people selling it say there were only 394 produced of this type that year. How true? Mileage is told to be 82000. Interior is okay with 2 small rips on the drivers seat. I am unsure about the shape the dash is in, cracks or what not. The asking price was $22000CAn and was recently dropped to $20000CAN; around $14000US.
