Is this a recent phenomenon? Does the car have a history of electrical problems? More info might help pinpoint the cause.

Just offhand, sounds like too much resistance in the light circuits. Check the local grounds.

I have only had the car for just under a year and I am not sure about that history but the electrics have been good except for recently fixing the turn indicator repeater.

When you say local grounds--Do you mean in the boot? or whereabouts?

I suspect I will have to get around to a re-wire one day but there is a long list of jobs....
