It needs to have a slot to have the seat belt pass freely. On 74 models there is a slot of about three inches on the vertical part of the armrest on the panel side and then there is a plastic molding that finishes the cut. There also is a hook on the front of the rear panel thru the wood that the seat belt hangs on to. There are no modifications to make room for the reel. But, there may not be mounting points for the reel behind the seat, and that needs to be secured somehow.
I think Andery could take a picture of his rear armrest and the reel behind the seat to visually see what they look like.

Merdad:

What is required in modifying the rear seat armrest for the '74 and later belts? Is the modification to the back of the armrest to make room for the reel? Is any mod required that is visible from the cabin?

BTW: My '72 2002 had conventional (i.e. modern) three point belt system.

seeing a coupe that had the shoulder mounting point attached to the rear panel right though the wood, and the bottom gears where they already are now. They must have made a secure point there. I saw the 2002 cabrios in West Fest that had this exact setup. This way there were no ugly hanging belts and also there was no need to go behind the rear seats and modifying armrests.
