My 72 coupe has the 74 and later inertia three point belt (shoulder and lap - new from Maximillian @ $400 a pair - cheaper than a funeral). I mounted it on the rear deck behind the rear seat. Look at the bottom of this deck (from the trunk) you should find a nut welded to a support plate. My coupe had an older version mounted when I bought it so there was already a hole and a little spacer (washer) in the cardboard/vinyl cover. This is a very simple installation. Looks a little funky though I have seen this as 'original' on the cars in the early 70's.

The armrest mount is just below the rear pillar. On mine there is not enough room to mount the inertial reel (the armrest is too narrow). There are actually two possible places: up high (about 6" below the level of the deck) is the front seat shoulder mount, down low (below the level where the rear seat meets its back) is the rear seat lap-belt mount.
If you mount something below the level of the rear deck (a few inches below the top of the front seat) you should run the belt through some loop attached as close to shoulder level as possible. Mounted too low, a shoulder belt will harmfully compress a body in an accident.

Schroth, OMP, and Sparco makes some touring/racing belts that bolt right in, but they cost as much or more and are not really the daily driver kind.

Hi again! :)

Now that the entire brake system has been replaced, the one last thing I need to do for safety's sake is to replace the terrible original front seat belts. Why weren't they made to be adjustable? Hell, something like an airline seat belt would be much better than what I currently have!

I've had to knot them several times just to get them CLOSE to fitting my body... and even then, they're pretty loose.

Anyone know where I can get retractable seat belts for a reasonable price? I think Maximillian has some, if I remember correctly, but they were expensive.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Lori
