My mothers Polaris 73 had chrome all around and this was/is definately the original delivered in US condition. My Baikal 73 had black fender grilles and chrome hood grilles allthough I am the second owner so I have no idea if this was original upon delivery in the US.

It seems to me that there was no particular standard from the factory. However, I always thought that light colored cars received chrome and dark colored cars received black.


I always thought (and have often seen) chrome fender and hood grilles on early E9s (up to '73, VIN 22xxxxx). Now, based on information from Walloth & Nesch, the restoration shop tells me that my '72 CSi should have black grilles as it has a light exterior color (polaris). Chrome grilles were apparently only fitted to dark colored cars.

What's the final word on this?
